CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
"I think I'm ready to go back to our booth now." I grabbed on to the edge of the porcelain sink next to me and pulled myself up. My legs were still a bit wobbly.
Candie put her arm through mine to steady me. "Are you sure? We can skip breakfast and I'll drop you off at home. Mark's busy down at his campaign headquarters, so he won't be home. We can spend some time together. I'm trying to lie a little low these last few weeks of his campaign. I don't want anyone bringing up the nastiness that happened this past summer."
I cringed thinking about that horrible episode in her life right before hers and Mark's wedding and his primary election for mayor. Her first fiancé was murdered in her house, her bedroom to be more specific, and a racy picture of her was leaked to the press and made front page headlines in the town's newspapers. Luckily, the murderer was caught and the public was kind enough to dismiss the picture as a folly from her youth. Mark won the primary by a landslide.
I squeezed Candie's arm. "Now don't you go worrying about such things. After the election, Wings Falls will welcome you again as their First Lady with open arms."
Candie came to an abrupt halt by one of the mirrors on the wall over the sinks. She pushed back her auburn curls and turned her face from side to side. "Oh my, I hadn't thought of my position as Mark's wife. I really am Wings Falls' First Lady. I better get over to Shear Satisfaction and have Lizzie give me a trim."
I laughed. My cousin was totally unaware of her natural beauty. "You don't have to worry about your hair or anything else. What are you doing?"
Candie stood in front of the mirror waving her hand back and forth like the Queen of England riding down the streets of London in her royal carriage. "Practicing my wave for when Mark and I greet the citizens of Wings Falls."
I poked her in the ribs and laughed. "Come on, Your Highness. Our breakfast awaits and is getting colder by the minute."
We linked our arms together and, laughing, exited the ladies' room to a few quizzical stares from the diners we passed on the way to our table.
When I sat back down at our table, I stared at my now cold bowl of grits. At least the cold lump of cereal no longer reminded me of Jell-O. I motioned Dottie over to our table.
"What can I do for you ladies? More coffee?" she asked, hovering a steaming pot over my half-empty mug.
I waved a hand over my bowl of grits. "That would be great, but can you warm up our breakfasts in the microwave? I needed to visit the ladies' room, and they got a little cold."
"Honey, no problem. Let me grab a tray and I'll scoop them up and nuke them." Dottie was back in a few seconds and placed our breakfast on a large brown serving tray.
